They work great in long thin rooms but the main problem you have is that the human hearing system is designed to process sound in stereo. What I see happening a lot when people using the Bose system is that it is set up to one side and so the singer only gets a sound source from one side which can be quite disorientating for the singer and the crowd who are used to two sound sources. The ideal situation for using a Bose L1 is where you're set up in a corner of the room and a two speaker set up would place your units well forward of the singer.
