In the interests of full disclosure, I entered the competition the night I went and didn't go through... I'm not exactly sure what it is about this venue, but it feels really sterile. The karaoke is staged in an area that is taken up by the bistro at one end of the room, poker machines on the side, a bar on the other side and TAB facilities up the other end. This means that there's a lot of people there, not necessarily there for the karaoke (though they do seem to enjoy it nonetheless...) The singers are quite good, but I recognised most of them as serial comp chasers, mostly from Marrickville RSL. They didn't enter the comp, so maybe it's just their local (or they'd already gotten through). Because you've got so many comp chasers there, all the life seems to have been rehearsed out of their songs. They certainly weren't going through the motions, but you really didn't get the feeling like they were going to try anything new that night... Lastly, the host... Hmm... He wasn't bad, but he wasn't particularly enthrawling either. He kept things moving along well enough and only sang once during the night, but he seemed more like a Bingo Caller than a karaoke host. He just didn't have that "we're going to have a great night tonight" vibe about him...
