From the Where2sing.com singers' feedback on karaoke gigs:
This karaoke gig runs
weekly 6:30pm-10:30pm on Wednesdays

David, I would prefer this to be an anonymous contribution. Is that fine with you? Sandgate RSL The current host has been operating Neil's Karaoke at Sandgate RSL for sometime. Neil is not the most entertaining host in the business, but he is one of the nicest. He is always polite and courteous to his performers and tries his best to mix the sound to best enhance the quality of the singers. This does not always happen and sometimes the mix is dreadful, with the music too low that it can not be heard. When it is good it almost seems like a fluke, but the regulars grin and bear it, such is the regard for the host. The club does not do much to promote the Karaoke on Wednesday nights. In the advertisments in the Sandgate Star the local rag they have Wednesday Night karaoke in small letters barely big enough to read. They do not turn the stage lights on so you can see the performers, yet on Thursday nights, Trivia night with one guitar player/host, the stage is awash with LIGHT. Are we ashamed of Karaoke - or What? The following for the Wednesday night programs seems to be falling off, with some former regulars just not coming. Recent competititions contribute somewhat to improving numbers, and every so often the crowd swells to acceptable for no apparent reason. It is a great auditorium, with a passable stage, but they have the host moved to the wrong position supposedly due to blocking passage ways in case of fire. FIRE? They should put Neil back where he operated from for ages. Where he is now his TV screens, must be a 106cn screen job, block out most of the singers for a section of the crowd. Half of the crowd also has their view of the stage blocked by ridiculous happy plants in planter boxes. Like I said are they ashamed of Karaoke - or what? The drinks are reasonably priced, but the food is not so good. Two for one meals with salad the size of a pensioner plate at the local Senior Cits. You get some good singers here, although a number of the regulars are real and I mean REAL karaoke singers, but isn't that a part of the love of Karaoke, to actually listen to Karaoke. If we want to listen to professionals, this isn't the place. Great potential with this venue, but the club needs to get behind Karaoke and do some promotion. They also need to seriously improve the Bistro food, to attract people to eat. The host needs to improve the sound system dramatically, listen from front of house or get advice from some singers on how to mix. Neil is just not an "in your face, Mr Personality" host, but this does not matter. He is consistent, loyal to his singers and a genuinely nice guy. He has run Karaoke for ages at a number of venues and knows how to run an evening for all to enjoy. As stated when he gets it right in the mixing and volume department, everyone has a much better night.
