Thurs night, 28 Feb 2008: THE HOSTS: They call themselves the Nat and Matt Retro Karaoke Show, with Matt dressed up like a 70s rocker, wig, makeup and all. I overheard Nat chatting with Aaron (KJ from BPM Management) whom I met the night before at The Balaclava, saying that she’s been in the business since she won a karaoke comp at aged 16 ½ , using tapes and reels, and that she now sings with a band 5 nights a week, and that Matt is also a professional musician. What they do for a living does show – they provide harmonies on EVERY song, but tastefully done, professionally done, only when harmonies are called for, and they do enhance the singers’ performances rather than be intrusive. They dance, they play air-guitar, and in fact they are very animated on stage in an entertaining way, filling in all those awkward instrumental moments. Great showmanship, great entertainers, they know their songs.
