Thurs night, 28 Feb 2008: THE VENUE: To me, the BEST karaoke venue I have been to in Melbourne, period. The sprawling Matthew Flinders complex is huge and “fairly” new (built from the ground up, not refurbished). Massive restaurant one end, massive gaming rooms in the centre, big showroom (where the karaoke is held) at the other end, with its own bar and open kitchen; past the Showroom is a large pool and chilling-out room at the far end of the complex. The showroom where the karaoke is held is about 3 - 4 times the size of a typical Vic pub karaoke venue – it’s a SHOWROOM, where bands and cabaret acts play, so has a proper stage, lighting, professional mixing console away from the stage to the left of the room, built-in PA sound-system, 4 fold-backs on stage. The main room is a huge square, with the bar at one end, stage the other – booths on one side, tables all over; it opens up to a separate smaller dining room on one side for those wishing to have their meals away from the sound system (open plan, no doors), and also tables lining a huge corridor (itself the size of most pub venues) which leads to a big pool-room (with 6 tables, some arcade games, a lounge area – sound proofed from the showroom). All in all a very impressive complex. PS: My G&T’s were $7 each; main meals there are $22 each.
