KWC 2008 Heat 3 Thurs 03April08: Yes - last night confirmed it for me – HOSTS maketh the Karaoke Show!! With Nat & Matt being at another gig last night, a couple of painted punk / glam-rock costumed guys (“couple” here is the operative word) stood-in. But alas, it was a lacklustre night : There was no continuity, there was no excitement. The couple was great visually, there were a few good ad-libbed wisecracks, there was some welcome harmony provided for the right songs, but they lacked Nat & Matt’s professionalism and infectious gaiety (they have “gayness” though) and on-stage presence in holding a flowing show together. Nonetheless, it was a well attended night, 60+ at its peak, with plenty of comp-chasers and other competitors. The sound was atrocious the whole night, even worse than normal (didn’t think that was possible!) but no one but me seemed to mind!! Only had 2 rotations – they started half an hour late, and there were many competing singers and non-competing ring-ins like myself. I was happy with the declaration of the eventual Heat Winner – but not the 2nd and 3rd placings – they had it the wrong way round in my opinion – that’s the only slight hitch thus far in the comp (well, in my book anyway). Again, plenty of crowd support on the dance-floor and singing along. PS: Downside: Many inconsiderate non-listening loud-talking drinking patrons in the karaoke floorspace. A few lone-wolf one-trick-pony comp-chasers who had the nerve of not even buying a single drink the whole time they were there - I also spied a table of 6, 1 comp-chaser and 5 friends, and only one OJ on the table the whole night!!! And people wonder why pub-karaoke is only slotted into inconvenient Mon-Thurs nights, and dying a slow painful death in an increasing number of Victorian suburbs!!!
