From the Where2sing.com forum:

Leather Baron: I agree with you totally.

I had the good fortune, when I was quite young, to see Sammy Davis Jr perform. Here was an entertainer who could do it all, sing, dance, impersonate, act, comedy, etc, etc. and, although he was probably one of the best dancers in the world, both past and present, I can only recall one ballad that he sang where he actually danced, and that, of course, was 'Mr Bojangles'.

Tom Jones certainly plays up to the females in the audience whilst singing Delilah but I can't remember him ever prancing around the stage when singing My Yiddish Mama.

This topic also brings to mind the Three Tenors first concert. In my opinion, of the three, Pavarotti is the better technically but I would much rather watch and listen to Domingo, who, I feel, sings from his soul not from his mind. Although they do not move from the spot, all singing the same style of music, each are very different, generating varying emotions from their audience (and the orchestra).

Also there are many professionals who spend most of their performance time behind an instrument but this does not render them unable to sell the song.

Unfortunately alot of singers do feel that any movement is better than none, not realising that meaningless gestures can often detract from a performance, not enhance it.

My only advice is to do what you feel comfortable with as the astute observer, especially judges, will notice any uneasiness you may have.
