Catman and Kittitude...
First time back here since that post of mine you responded to, so a belated thank you to you both for the heads up! It was the Sunday I was invited to. I'd assumed it was for karaoke. Perhaps they meant a talent quest was on or something? I don't know. I'll ask when next I see them.

No. You ARE selling yourself short, my friend! Come on, man! You know I've got at least SOME taste when it comes to talent! You deserved to get through to second round!
As for my rendition of November Rain, I was a little bit drunk and mostly unprepared for not only the missing second half of the song but also that full length intro of 52 seconds which of course alerted me to the fact it was not going to be the song I had prepared myself for. Learn from the experience is my philosophy there. Wasn't greatly disappointed. Even had it been the version I expected and even if I had sung it my best, I doubt I would have made the top 4. Those ladies were phenomenal on the night. All very deserving of the top spots. Graham too said during the break before the 3rd round was started, that it was going to be an all female top 4.
I was much impressed with the place winners.

You're so right regarding movement. When I looked at the footage of myself singing November Rain at Chatswood RSL's grand final last week, I noticed that in my slightly beyond tipsy state, I wasn't standing still and basically ''planted'' as I had planned but shifting my weight nervously and unable to keep still. Grrr... Definitely would have counted against me.
Love the way you think regarding branching out. If I may bring up Chatty RSL's final again, as this was my first comp to do just for fun rather than prize money, I decided to branch out and sing rarely performed songs. Despite telling people this, they advised me to stick with what I'm popular for. Even one of the judges surprised me when he expressed his dissatisfaction that I departed from the up tempo Elvis stuff. The Dentist song from Little Shop of Horrors is basically such a song so I don't know why he was complaining. I thought I'd get his vote for choosing to sing so deeply for November Rain too as he has a deep voice himself. I don't know.
Anyway, it annoys me that people take the attitude of, ''Well that obviously didn't work. You should go back to being where you're safe,'' even if it's your first attempt! Hell, I was happy to get into the 2nd round and receive the applause I did given my first song I'd only done 3 times before and November Rain, I'd only ever sung twice or maybe even just once since starting singing karaoke about 12 years ago. Practise a song often enough and you can usually improve on it. Never stick with ''what's safe.'' Test yourself. When you get it right, it can be so rewarding.

Finally, regarding Mr Sammy Davis Jnr... Don't begrudge him his multiple talents. I mean, he lost an eye for crying out loud, so cut him SOME slack, hmmm?.
