Great comments. Thanks guys!
I do intend to state upfront that the songs are my own as I am usually fairly intuitive when it comes to an audience's appreciation for my performance. It's not all about the response at the end but also during the song that counts. However, I have more than once been thrown for a loop by stunned mullet expressions of an audience apparently in shock (as in just witnessed a car accident kind of shock), then just sit blankly for a few seconds once the song's over making me think they must have hated me, only to then erupt with thunderous applause and cheers. Doesn't happen often and I seriously doubt any of my current songs will garner such a reaction but one never knows.
As for people singing an unreleased song at karaoke and spreading it from venue to venue, I for one wouldn't entrust my songs to anyone till the material had been commercial for some time. Otherwise, singers who perhaps underestimate the difficulty of the song, shall we say, could put people off the song before it's even gotten off the ground. It's not worth the risk. Also, you wouldn't want to come onto the scene with a new song only for people to think it's a cover because they've heard someone else sing it already.
Even when I do get around to doing this next year, I'll only be singing one of my songs in a night otherwise some audience members might think I'm being pretentious or seeming like a ''wannabe'' who can't get a proper gig and has to 'resort to' singing his stuff at karaoke. Not what I'm about at all and I certainly don't want to annoy anyone in the crowd, so, one original song per karaoke night will be fine.
And James, keep telling people there's no pattern with the hit songs. That works out great for me cos they'll all stop looking for what I've already found! lol. No, I'm not sharing but just as all science goes, will just have to prove it. =)
