I agree with you Tom that technique is key to matching your vocals to the backing vocals and instruments. Your voice should never be so powerful as to down out the backing vocals and instruments. This sounds awful and yet this is so true in karaoke by we amateurs. Of course the reverse frequently happens where the instruments overpower the weak vocals. I guess that' s why some of the best rock singers are so melodic, gentle and high pictched when listened closely and the backups are clear even with the crying guitars. Even Freddie Mercury with such a powerful voice used this technique.

Of course the reverse frequently happens where the instruments overpower the weak vocals. But given a choice I'd prefer the weaker vocals over the powerful just because it sounds pleasant. You should not though go so gentle in your voice as to alter the original as the Australian Idol guy who sang I'LL be by Edwin McCain in a completely different tone & style from the original.
