From the Where2sing.com forum:

re noise: If you've ever played in a band, you'll know what noise creep is. The guitarist plays louder so he can hear himself over the drummer. The bass player follows. Then the drummer. Then back to the guitarist - a feedback loop. I've seen some karaoke singers belt out as loudly as a live band (but not as musically) and sometimes to pain levels. Marg was nearly ill at one venue from speakers too close (I had remedied by blocking my ears with tissue). So the noise level thing is real. It's rarely a problem in huge halls like Chatswood or Rooty Hill. However, there is a definite generation gap. Certainly older friends of ours have found karaoke in general very loud. Maybe young people think it's a good thing to not have any baby boomers around but industrial deafness does no one any good. and my main issue was what to do about 'saboteur' singers or ones who try hard but sound so bad that it gives the gig a bad impression from non-participants. As I said, singers are a dime a dozen. We need more listeners and food/drink buyers. Tom
