Yes, that's the same restaurant-venue in Knox as I run now, but different owners then. Ian, with his assistant Jo, were the hired KJs (equipment and all) in them old days (like you said, 14-15 years ago), before the then-owner, at my suggestion, installed his own system and then only hired guest-KJs at a fraction of the cost.
Ian was getting paid $400 for 2 shows a week back then in the early 1990s (from 10pm till around 1am, 2 X 3 hour shows), amounting to $20K annually. So, as they were going to make karaoke an ongoing feature, it made financial sense to set up their own system at an initial cost of around $15K then and hire guest KJs at $50 (back then) a shot - that went on for 12 years until I took over.
A great added feature they had back then too is it that they had a bank of 4 rotating KJs, and who's on which night depends on the composition of the expected crowd (which is easy to determine as it is a restaurant venue and they can see who has booked when, in advance) - they had the funky 'Jamaica' on when it is a predominantly young crowd, they will put on the angelic Nicole with the trained sweet voice when they have a more mature crowd, etc. ..... and they will put on the 'Enforcer', me, when they expected a whole bunch of riff-raffs, LOL !!
I took over the venue 3 years ago.
