JOHHNY B, BARRI TONE:

Ok. Time for me to join in the fray … “Of things Class, Crap & Cream” !!

For a long time (over 20 years) I have noticed the following FACT about karaoke venues in Victoria : well over 90% (and I dare say, 99.5%) of them are located in pubs / hotels in “working-class” suburbs, with the resulting patrons and attendees representative of that demographic.

To me, this Victorian FACT, is NOT surprising:
- Karaoke is considered to be “free” entertainment by many, hence their “proper” place is in such geographical / demographical locations, where most do not have a going-out budget, let alone an entertainment budget to speak of !
- Karaoke is also considered cheap entertainment to have on by those publicans, as most KJs are undercutting like no tomorrow to get such gigs.

Not to put any venue down, but David, you have been to and you also did a mini-review on The Beehive some time ago … which wasn’t too flattering, and which I totally agree with. I have been there myself on 3-4 occasions over the last 6-7 years to meet up with friends – like Adam (now in Qld), the Karaoke Kowgirl, etc. – and that’s where I first met JAMES T ORR too.

To have The Beehive listed as No.7 in the National Top 10 Karaoke Venues says it all about the state of play for karaoke and karaoke venues in Victoria … The Knox Club as a top Victorian venue, yes, I agree … but The Beehive as the No.2 Victorian Venue, what a joke !!??

To me, The Bush Inn Hotel will be the last standing Victorian karaoke venue in a reasonably well-to-do suburb when karaoke re-opens there in Feb 2007 (or so it says on the Gigs-Listing) – Bruce, BPM Entertainment / Shazzy to confirm.

NOTE: I do not know Sydney / NSW, or QLD at all, so I cannot comment on the demographics of the localities where some of the more popular karaoke venues are. But NSW and QLD could be very different, in the sense of their “pokies funded clubs”, which always had a march on Victorian venues which never had such money-making-gizmos as support for entertainment-acts until in “recent years”.
