From the Where2sing.com forum:

I was just reading the latest 'Boiling Point' article where the two contestants ended up being 'judged' by the crowd on the night. A few years ago I saw a similar situation to that at a karaoke talent contest. It had reached a situation where the judges had reached a 'stalemate' and could not decide between two very talented contestants and in the end it came down to a 'sing off', the contestants had to sing a song each that was chosen at random by the judges, (it had to be a song that the contestants knew) taking into account the type of songs that the contestants had sung during the heats, semi and final, (e.g., country, ballad, rock'n'roll) but they were not allowed to sing any of the songs they had previously sung in the contest. It still took the judges a long time to deliberate but in the end they did come up with a winner but it was by a very narrow margin.

I would have to wonder if letting the audience decide (was it by applause and judged by an applause meter?) is the right thing to do in a situation like that, unless the audience contains some experts in the field, then each member of the audience would be applauding for the singer that he or she came along to support.

It is only a suggestion, but to the person who wrote the article, if the same situation occurs again, why not suggest to the organisers that they hold a 'sing off' such as the type above?

Have a good day.
