From the Where2sing.com forum:

Last Friday night I went to a show in an Irish pub that has just regained a licence to have live music - but since it does not allow for bands, they had karaoke. 6,500 songs running from a PC using CompuHost software, a couple of powered speakers that looked big enough for the job but sounded as though they were turned up high but were having the volume controlled from the PC or mixer and thus rattled and distorted any time someone sang.

The host said the mixer had been sitting unused for the year that there was no licence in the venue, and that it now had no effects working (is this likely?) - and the sound of the vocals without any effects was really, really flat. In fact, so flat that only the host sang (and one other bloke who was skint and needed the drink) - even the offer of a free drink for each and every song didn't get any takers.

I've revised my view on fx - I'll gratefully receive any, even too much, but please never ask me to sing with none.
