From the Where2sing.com forum:

FLEXI START AND FINISH TIMES just highlight the complete lack of professionalism of both the KJ and venue, showing no respect to both the punters, and to that very scarce (and easily lost, but which you can’t get back) commodity called “time”.

If this was practised anywhere else … well, the consequences would be nasty to say the least. How do people feel about late train and plane arrivals and departures? Would a cinema refrain from screening a movie at a particular time-slot when there aren’t enough bums on seats as yet? Try starting a concert or stage production 10-15 mins late? Try holding up a Test Cricket match while waiting for the MCG to fill up …!!??

On the flip-side of things, at times (rare as it may be) when there’s a huge crowd waiting well before advertised starting time (an hour, or maybe a good half hour earlier), would a late-starting KJ then start the show EARLIER?? I guess not!!

In my personal case I am a bit different – I have been told off for starting my gigs too early, well, earlier than advertised starting time (being told off by smokers still smoking outside)! I do this when I observe that most people at my venue have already finished their meals, and are practically chomping at the bit eager to get up to sing, or when I have an incredible number of early song requests piling up already. My advertised start time is 9pm’ish but I usually start at 8,45pm, and sometimes as early as 8.30pm, but never later than 9pm. Gotta play it by ear, start earlier if you have to .... but never later than the advertised starting time.
