Starting time is fundamental to karaoke, or indeed any business. Close to one of my shops some years ago were a small fish shop and a snack bar, the snack bar having perhaps 50 customers a day at the point at which Eddie closed it. Andy from the fish shop (on Logan Road, Stones Corner, Qld in the mid 1980s) waited a week before installing a hot display cabinet with pies etc, by which time many locals had found another snack shop. Worse, Andy would wait until the first customer arrived before he started cooking food, and would always make just a couple less than required for the day so that none was left unsold. Day by day he lost the 'new' first of the day and the 'new' last of the day, and it took him almost exactly one month to lose every one of the customers he had gained from the closing of the adjacent snack bar. Fascinated by this, I did ask him what happened to all his newly acquired customers - he seemed totally unaware that he had been losing a customer a day, and of the financial consequence.
