Trying to reconcile views by Rosalie & James T. Orr: On the one hand, I do share the collective embarassment of 'karaoke being looked upon as nothing more than a ' side-show ' full of freaks and weirdo's'. On the other hand, we are admonished to always be supportive, not matter how awful the performance. Interested in more details re Rosalie's reference to 'basement' and 'trailer trash' behaviour. I assume we're not talking about turning the cold shoulder to really dreadful performances (I confessed a few weeks ago to having booed someone), but something more violent?

Also, what is wrong with buying 'a few pieces of equipment, plonk them on a few chairs and tables and call this Karaoke.'?. We went to a pub in Cessnock on the weekend that did just that - broke all the rules: tiny song list, host hogged mike, praised mediocrity by letting mates/locals do repeat songs, no demonstrable queue rotation - but we all had a good time! Reason: small crowd. We got to sing as much as we wanted anyway, so these issues were inconsequential, and we'll certainly go again if for nothing else but the food and wood fire. And everyone was friendly & welcoming.

Anyway, Rosalie, tell us some more details about 'trailer trash behaviour'. After all, Eminem has made this fashionable. Tom
