James, jlee: I prefer good speaker positioning and mixing over foldback because I'm hearing what the audience hears. Volume-wise, the music should be just above conversation level and the vocals just a touch above that. Any more, and I'll compensate by pulling the microphone away. If its mixed properly with the right amount of echo/reverb for the room aucostics then it doesn't need to be super-loud. This also lets us suffer through less capable singers without causing a fire-drill for the duration of their song.

If you have a horse throat then your over-straining your voice and should stop before you damage it. Ensure plenty of H2O intake during the day and warm up with either black sambucca or singing along quietly at the back with the first couple of singers [ or try to, its kinda hard if you have a strong voice lol ]. Warming up? Just a couple of tunes that exercise the chest, mid, head and fasetto ranges.
