From the Where2sing.com forum:

James T: re getting hoarse through singing. I usually find that trying to talk over loud karaoke kills my voice far more than singing. After all I sing through a mike. Singing is only a problem if I were doing some throat-destructive song like Soprano's themesong 'Got Myself a Gun', which is fun but leaves me unable to sing much thereafter.

I think any gig is way too loud if I can't even hear what my wife is trying to shout in my ear (often something like 'the sound is killing me. let's get outta here'). I note the comment by Jlee ' music was so loud i thought my ears would start to bleed'.

If karaoke is tacked onto what is essentially a disco then I suppose it's 'buyer beware', as karaoke doesn't raise the noise level, but I'm still skeptical of the economics of excess volume.

If we're looking to raise the karaoke profile (which I assume is one of the reasons for the existence of W2S and the reason people read it) we should think about the associations people make with karaoke. For example, in SA one karaoke at a prominent mid-town bar was tacked onto a full-on adult strip club. You can't get much lower down the status pole than that - karaoke at the Bada-Bing would have been more upmarket.

Loud, bad music oddly enough gives us a public impression of (in the immortal words of James T) 'a ' side-show ' full of freaks and weirdo's. Hmm .... wonder why? Tom
