GEM OF A PLACE : Alma Sports Club PART 3

The Performances:
Rotation was professional and very fair to start off with – first round of singers were in the order of their respective arrivals at the venue – the host ANDREW must have a good memory, or he just simply fluked it!

All performers were warmly applauded by all present. It is plain to see that there was no first-time-karaoke-singer amongst the first rotation.

Just before the show started I introduced myself to ANDREW, and told him that I will be writing a review and posting it in where2 sing. He then recognised who I am when I mentioned where2sing, and I also vaguely remember his face when he said that he had been to the MALAYA several times over the years.

And as fate would have it, the system failed when he called me up for my first song – the screens failed, the sound was muddled otherwise I would have soldiered on – we all know that sinking feeling as a host when such things happened – after several go’s, while we exchanged mindless banter between ourselves and with the crowd, we decided to ditch that song and went on to the next one.

Come 11pm and I have had my 2nd song – not bad, 2 songs within the hour.

The Lowlight Of The Night:
In walked 2 faces I vaguely remember from my karaoke-gallivanting past, at 11.10pm precisely – and yes, you guessed it – beeline for the request slips (not the songbooks mind you, they know exactly what they want!) and scribble scribble, they had their requests up before you can utter “What the??!!??”.

And to my surprise, and annoyance, Ernie got his first song at 11.20pm, precisely 10 minutes from the moment he walked in, just after he bought his coke from the bar!!

The rest of us have been there 2 – 3 hours, and we all only had our 2nd song. If I was the host, I would have let another rotation go by before I put these latecomers on (they may well be regulars … but they do not deserve to be let on after only 10 minutes upon arrival …)

I left straight after that – not because of that incident – but because it was a repeat of a song done 3 songs ago, and I cannot stand someone murdering a song with a high pitch whine … Victorian punters would know this Ernie person and his whining …. I do not want to be confronted with a gang of stray dogs at the front when I am leaving, drawn there by the whining …

All in all, a good night out, but can be much better if:
(a) Management lets the Host start the Show on time.
(b) The Host pays a bit more attention to fair rotation, and be wary of repeating songs within the same rotation.
(c) You bring along a few gold coins to try your luck at the machines when the Whiner gets on …
