I have the feeling that many KJs are of the opinion that karaoke is a product that sells itself. I would challenge that belief.
Karaoke really needs advertising. It needs promotion so as to appeal to a wider audience than it does. Not just in the form of signs and posters but actual word of mouth and lacklustre KJs are not going to enthuse their audiences to pass the word around.
Some KJs are able to take what should be a fun night out for everyone and turn it into a boring way to pass the evening. The venue usually suffers as being seen as not hot enough to have any REAL entertainment like bands or whatever. It would not surprise me if that phenomenon is partially to blame for the social stigma karaoke has attached to it. ''Karaoke? *groans and rolls of eyes* Are you serious? You gotta be kidding! Let's go somewhere else instead...''
Make sure the majority of your audience is having fun by just being present and not only when they are on stage, would be my advice. It's probably the difference that MAKES the difference between a good karaoke and a mediocre or bad one.
