From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hi Kititude,
re boiling point - hosts singing all the time. I always sing the first song of the night and my reason is two-fold. Number one is my hubby likes to tweek foldback and other knobs that only he knows about (he he he). I don't go near those dials ...... to ensure that the basic levels are set. Mind you every singer is different and additional tweeking does occur to allow for different vocal ability.

Number two, I love to sing and it keeps my heart in the game of karaoke. I always try to find a new song or a new challenge and when I feel good as a singer then I can carry this attitude with me for the rest of the night. I have seen too many hosts who have lost heart for the game and just stand there with a 'next' attitude and it shows! I usually never sing again the for rest of the night unless the first few rounds are very small and the songs chosen are slow to lift the spirit of the room or I will ask one of the audience to join me for inclusivity.

I remember one particular lady who has a very soft voice (I suspect it's because she not very confident - but loves to sing) once accepted an invitation from me to sing the fast Proud Mary version. I encouraged her to let it out and just sing her heart out and boy did she go for it. The room rocked and she still thanks me for helping her to sing a song she never would have had the courage to try.

There are times when the audience will nag you to sing another song and I politely refuse if the room is full of singers or accept if I feel that the room needs a lift or a song that will fit the mood but I will only do it if I know that every new singer has had their turn to sing and we are into another round and sometimes I even approach the next singer who knows they are next to ask permission to sing and they usually say ...... sure!

Whichever way ....... a good host will NOT purposefully slot themselves into the round and should in my opinion use their feet (walk around the room) and ears (let people approach you and listen) to guage audience need, reaction and whether you as a host should or shouldn't sing.
Cheers - Rosalie.
