From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hi everyone. jlee, since we're still on the same subject, I dont see the nessessity for overly loud music at all. If a venue has lots of regulars and people are looking for karaoke they will find it and you shouldnt have to rely on dragging people off the street. Im sure the foot traffic would hear the music anyway as they pass and seeing the place packed to capacity should be enough for them to poke their heads in the door. On the other side of the coin, imagine how many people are being put off cause the music is too loud?

In Rovics case, if what Tony the trucker says is true and your venue has so many regulars that thats how it manages to stay at 3 in the top ten, and you regularly have so many singers that its hard to get a song in, why on earth do you need to continue to entice even more punters with throbbing music causing people outside to fall over? Maybe Im reading the whole thing wrong, but it just doesnt make sense to me. But then if its working for you Rovics keep it up if thats what the venue wants. Dont mess with a good thing hey?

Music Addict, thanks. Im grateful for any suggestions about karaoke venues although I do tend to steer clear of city venues. Too expensive and too many drunken youngsters for me. I got past the night club scene quite some time ago.
