From the Where2sing.com forum:

James, i totally agree and am myself quite at home in that environment, but i have noticed that when the drunks kick into karaoke mode alot of the water / soft drink patrons do end up leaving even though the night is still young!!....Maybe someone should start up a venue that caters just for karaoke singers...(no drunks after 9pm)....the venue might not make much money, but the host could boast about having a huge number of patrons / singers....Wonder realistically though how long that venue would be able to keep it's doors open??

I agree with Trish though you don't have to be buying alcohol, any purchase over the bar is good, but alcohol is the main source of income so a couple of drinks that keeps you under the legal limit if your driving wouldn't go astray..
