One thing we rarely mention is that many people drive miles to a karaoke venue - hence, have no choice but to restrict drinking. They may or may not be accomplished singers. There is probably some benefit from people who neither drink nor sing but are 'regular'. However, the till is hard to fool and while these folk may give the impression of a profitable crowd in reality they are not commercially viable. What would be ideal would be more listeners - ie- people who are content to sit & listen & buy a drink. They might just be locals who would attend that club/pub anyway & listen to what's going on the night, whether karaoke or the club act. We have some such at Chatswood. Instead of cultivating such people we seem to put them down as 'lurkers'. This is on the assumption that everyone is really a closet karaoke wannabee and that singing has something to do with 'give it a go' rather than carrying a tune. The worst hosts even put down their actual singers in favour of offkey screaming yobbos. My suggestion for sustainability is that we try to sing decently and keep noise levels to sane levels so people can actually listen comfortably. - is that too much to ask? Tom
