From the Where2sing.com forum:

Kev this 'Karaoke is about having 'Fun'' notion is the biggest reason we are part of one of the most publicly-reviled hobbies in the world. People at our local drive for miles across Sydney to attend and sit & listen to others for hours. Is this just 'fun'? In law, my fun at swinging my fist ends well before the other guy's nose. We excuse all sorts of outright rudeness and boorishness in the name of this 'Karaoke is about having 'Fun'' mythology. I'm not being precious - some of the people who annoy me at karaoke have also obviously annoyed bouncers & others because you often find them expelled & banned. When I talk about violence I refer to the tangible, genuine sort that causes actual damage to people -ie- tinnitus. I've seen patients with this and it is not fun. This is a condition that can drive people to near suicide. We've had to stop attending some venues because poor KJ control allowed yobbo's to take control of the gear and nearly deafen us - despite cotton in our ears.

As to the 'fun' angle and singing quality, the SBS show was the clearest example of the abuse of the 'Karaoke is about having 'Fun'' myth to excuse their biased judging. We went to this event and met quite a few professional & semi-pro singers (who had driven miles to that venue) and talked to the promoters who, off the record, were very impressed with the calibre of singers. But the politically-correct agenda had been 'Karaoke is about having 'Fun'' and anti-Idol, so the result was fairly uniformly surprising and disappointing.

The whole thing needs some controls or it will go belly up in the same way as pub bands - noise levels and ignoring local residents. Listening to loud idiots is not fun.

We've had some good, constructive suggestions below from hosts and it wouldn't take much to tidy up the edges. This would improve the fun all around. Tom
