From the Where2sing.com forum:

It's funny. My brother is a fantastic singer, professionally trained, who doesn't like going to Karaoke because he feels it is for fun. Not for 'true singers' . Funnily enough all of his musical friends share the same opinion. I guess thats why a lot of us don't do the comp scene. Karaoke is about fun, mucking around, being Pink or ABBA or Tom Jones for a few minutes. I like to have a few drinks to give me courage, and I can also laugh at myself at lot easier. When Michael and I went to Karaoke in Melbourne, on both occassions there was a cover charge. We were horrified, $5 each on both occassions at different locations. I can watch a drag show at the Imperial for that. Wil comes to Kellys under the influence of god knows what and is the most entertaining Karaoke singer around. Sure, alcohol can make us sound a little worse for wear at times, but I truly believe Karaoke for most of us is about socialising, having a sing and a laugh. I know that I personally find a sober crowd a quiet crowd and the bar take is ultimately why the pub employs Karaoke or any other kind of entertainment for that matter.
