From the Where2sing.com forum:

A karaoke gig will always filter patrons in some way or another, whether it be due to the hosting style, the list (too small, not enough variety), the type of people it already attracts and the type of venue it is. I feel uncomfortable going to RSLs for karaoke as it usually attracts the kind of people that don't take too kindly to me wanting to belt out some Nirvana or Pearl Jam should the desire take hold. That's not to say that there aren't people who would love to go to a venue like that. Surely the reverse holds true? And if so, why shouldn't a host try and pre-determine what kind of demographic they attract rather than using the scatter-gun approach and just try and attract everyone who wants to come? There are pros and cons to both approaches and if a host chooses to try and attract singers who seek to go to a venue that doesn't have 'the old favourites' on the list, then they need to do it in a very precise way. That includes knowing that they'll probably attract more die-hard karaoke singers who may not be looking to get completely plastered every night that they're there and will expect short precise rotations. Just need to make sure everyone involved in the gig understands why they want to attract that kind of singer...
