Note that these faces or 'emoticons' (that's 'emotiCons') can often have the variation of a dash acting as a nose, so

Sometimes, just to be more stylistic, people will use alternative symbols for the eyes such as an equals sign, which foregoes the use of a nose, like
=)
instead of
:)
Likewise some will use different symbols for the nose too.
:^)
or
:o)
for example.
When in doubt what the emoticon is, just tilt your head so your chin points to your right. That way, you can see what the face / emoticon is more easily.
Also, as you have probably noticed by now, abbreviations can be in capitals or lower case so
LOL
is just the same as
lol
