From the Where2sing.com forum:

re Noise. I would have accepted that it was up to the KJ except having talked to Garry for some years he claims to have tried everything to tame the volume on some singers and it just doesn't work. I have no reason to doubt this as he has compression, EQ and all the other tools. Some people just hold the mic too damn close. You're quite correct that I hope this will trickle down through the Forum. The idea is to put a negative connotation on the Chook Raffle sound so that no one glamourizes it or confuses it with a 'big' sound or a 'young' sound. Obviously it will have no effect on casual blow-ins or those out of the loop. But some of the loudest people are regulars who take their singing seriously week in week out over years. So just getting through to them would spread the word. It's not easy. No sooner had we spoken to one guy who seemed to take on board the advice of one of our regulars, himself a former band singer, this guy then produced one of the loudest noises ever created by human voice. I think I only avoided damage because I was talking at the time, equalizing pressure somewhat. So it's not an easy sell.
