Yes, Garry did say that. My guess is that someone at full blast 1 cm from mike turns the issue into black & white -ie- you either turn the sound off or not - as any volume at all gives a loud noise. I note such a phenomenon when trying to dub into a mic input on a computer. The slightest touch of the volume control overloads it. And the singer can catch the KJ off guard so that it makes it hard for them to anticipate when the loud noise will come in . A compressor/limiter only partly handles this issue. Some of these folk are loud enough to be heard without a mic.

We had only 1 ear piercer last night but it was a bit painful even though an entertaining song, on key etc. I do think peer pressure is an important long term solution - getting across that the bingo caller sound isn't hip or raunchy but degrades an otherwise good performance.
