From the Where2sing.com forum:

re 6 o'clock starts. What's with the insulting 'wake up, Tom' ? Do I personally insult any of you? I try to talk in general terms. A city the size of Sydney ought to be able to support at least one after-work gig a fortnight even if not each week. As for late night entertainment there are all sorts of markets and age groups who want different sorts of things. Noise levels became an issue long before karaoke and was one of the reasons for its ascendance over 'live' music (which began to use drum machines & midi and end up like karaoke). A karaoke rig is essentially a hi-fi -ie- it plays a soundtrack just like a radio. The overall sound can be controlled, unlike a band with its fixed minimum volume set by the drum kit. So it's not just a matter of our preferences as hosts and customers. There are other stakeholders involved like venue neighbours, other club patrons etc. whom we have to consider.
