I didn't mean you have to be classically trained to appreciate good opera, I was merely pointing out that I found it helpful when it came to judging operatic technique and recognizing flaws. Like I said, I do like his voice. He's just not that great in my opinion.

Ah yes... Good ol' Mario Lanza - an inspiration to many, even Elvis Presley. I wish Ivan Rebroff songs were on karaoke, then we deep voiced men could strut our stuff effectively too instead of having to sacrifice comfort range for what's on offer at karaoke. By that, I mean, even though I get compliments for many songs, I can't help but think, 'Hey, if you like that, I really wish you could hear me sing the stuff that REALLY suits my voice as well as sounds good.' If you're unfamiliar with Ivan Rebroff, check him out at You Tube. There's one very brief clip there with just a black screen which shows off just how low he can go. He has been declared to have the deepest bass and highest falsetto in the world and 17 years ago, when he was 59, he spent more than 300 days of the year touring around on his jet plane. Of course, he is fluent in several languages so perhaps his stuff is on karaoke but in different countries.

What's wrong with comparing an amateur with a great? Every great started out as an amateur. To think no other amateur will ever compare is silly, isn't it? I'm so over people saying how there will never be another so and so. Rubbish. There's always the next somebody just waiting in the wings and I think they're the ones who deserve the credit not the mediocre ones. How is that wrong? Not everyone can be great, same as not everyone can be considered good looking or a great sportsperson or honest or possessed of any other quality you care to name. Some have it, some don't. Some can learn it when it comes to singing or even getting better with attracting people they desire but there is always gonna be the select few who just have what it takes naturally and others who don't. Paul Potts is pleasant. I'll give him that. Good enough to move millions as has been said but imagine how much MORE impact he'd have had if he did have a Pavarotti kind of quality! Don't you think the reaction would have been even MORE enthusiastic? Of course it would. I much prefer the cream of the crop quality types who appear as opposed to just making do with whoever gets a lucky break. Good on Paul for making it this far and may he go on to bigger and better things but I know there are better people out there. How many times have we read or posted on this very forum about singers we have seen in the flesh at karaoke or who exist in our social circles, who could wipe the floor with the Australian Idol finalists or even winners? Well, I have seen other amateur opera singers far better than Mr Potts too.

Forgive me all but I'm gonna keep listening for the greats. I do know art and I also know what I like.
