| From the Where2sing.com forum: Johnny you have addresed the issues with authority however your stance is more towards the classical 'critique' your acceptance of the inspiration that was 'Mario Lanza ' to the likes of Carreras etc. and the adoration of millions of fans did not secure him a place at La Scalla nor has his contribution to classical music being recognised by the 'classical critique' then or today, the fact remains 'Hollywood' doesnot make GREAT TENORS but what did occur was something that until then only came out of ITALY and that was a TRUE PEOPLES 'CARUSO ' and this is where the commercialisation of 'Classical/Popular' began and was sadly dismissed and ignored by the intelligentia a SAD SAD MISTAKE!
Popular Tenors are just that Popular because they share their voices with us in Songs not Arias, trained or untrained the popular tenor is alive and well in modern music today and will continue to bring pleasure to millions as they have done in past 100 years or more!
Mario Lanza (regardless of his reasons) broke down barriers in classical music and with the help of Hollywood Hype made Arias and Songs available to everyone! BRAVO!
