From the Where2sing.com forum:

Johnny thanks for the long, thoughtful reply to my rhetorical question. I wasn't asking for an answer, just still trying to figure out why karaoke is so different to other hobby groups when there are so many obvious benefits just from the sound tracks alone, let alone crowd response. As to my motives, karaoke is to me the greatest thing since sliced bread. No endless guitar tuning & 'do youse know Midnight Special?'. Sure, I can sing in the shower and have enough gear to record an album at home, probably with better sound than I would at karaoke because I can rehearse, do re-takes, set my own reverb etc. But what would that tell me? Much more fun to see if a crowd likes it and to have 5-10,000 songs to choose from. The backing tracks p*** all over my old midi sequences. In fact, I am greatly heartened by the discussion of opera. That karaoke singers would try such things is a great eye-opener (even if it takes an Idol show to kick it off). Rap is another big challenge. I haven't heard much rap since Nanna. All these things lift us from a low common denominator, such as My Way twice a night.
