From the Where2sing.com forum:

I'm with you Tom when it comes to key being the issue. I believe the human voice has a sweet spot (like a tennis racket or golf club) but when with musical backing, if that sweet spot is out of alignment with that of the instruments, even a fab voice or song can sound mediocre. I have a great range in terms of how high and how low I CAN go but the sweet sound is only for a limited range smack bang in the middle. When I hit high notes, it's nowhere near as effective as a tenor or even high baritone hitting them. It irks me but there you go. I am hopeful that one's sweet range can be extended though. I take solace that there are some songs where I can nail a low note that leaves most men for dead like in Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline: 'We fill it up with only TWO' for example. I am not so sure that tenors are as rare as you say. My experience in musical theatre told me it was the deep voiced guys who were in short supply.
Incidentally, I don't find Barnesy that high except for maybe a couple of his screaming notes. Farnesy is another matter but that doesn't bother me as I'm one of the few who doesn't care for his stuff (mainly cos I don't like his voice).

el barto...
Freddie Mercury is the high voiced guy whom I like but have trouble with simply because he was able to go so damn high. Even Jon Bon Jovi and Axl Rose, I can keep up with for most of their range but Freddie goes several notes higher which is in my head voice and falsetto range and therefore leaving my voice unsuitable for many of his songs. Doesn't stop me from attempting them now and then though lol - and as I was just saying, the range extension has certainly allowed me to actually sing some of the Queen songs now that I never used to be able to.
