Tom...
Perhaps your hearing has failed you a bit more than mine? I often find it difficult to hear someone at say the other end of a rectangular table or maybe if I'm on the dance floor trying to converse but in general, it's fairly easy at karaoke unless the song is perversely loud.

Sammo...
Well, as a singer with hopes for fame and fortune and several dozen songs of my own composition, I am once again going to separate myself from the herd and say, perhaps some of us WILL know that kind of achievement. I am sure there are others here who feel the same about their own destinies so, it's a bit cheeky of you to say we'll none of us achieve it this lifetime! With certain circumstances in your favour and the fact that the internet and reality tv can make a celebrity out of someone in next to no time, just as it did for PP, well, ANYONE can aspire to dizzying heights.
As for the criticism of PP, well, he is very much like several comp chasers in (at least) the Sydney circuit - a pro who competes at amateur level under the pretence of being another amateur.
Was just discussing this with another forumer on the phone. When you're exposed to good quality singers often, it becomes very easy to distinguish other good quality singers from the average to mediocre ones. When judging karaoke comps, I found it best to set a mark for 'good' and leave plenty of room for 'Mind blowingly fantastic' in order to grade fairly. Someone who has only known mediocre voices is going to go ga ga over someone with a 'good' voice and may well give them full marks vocally. But what happens when the 'great' or even 'fantastic' singer comes along and totally screws that judge's score up by singing above the level that they have already given full marks to? Do they score a 15 and 20 out of 10 then? Paul Pott is a mediocre tenor by professional standards. I'd be surprised if he could even cut the grade for an audition for say the Sydney or London Opera as anything more than a chorus member - and even then, only if they were short on tenors. If they weren't short on them, no way would he get in imo. Now you can all hate me for saying so but it's true. I'm not against the little battler but I'm not going to give praise where none is deserved. He got somewhere and good on him for trying and winning. However, that doesn't make him the greatest. There are plenty of good batsmen in cricket out there but they're not Bradman. Plenty of good boxers but who aren't Ali. Plenty of good golfers who aren't Tiger. Plenty of good painters but who are not Michelangelo. Paul Pott is just 'another' singer. He's pleasant enough but he's no Pavarotti.
