| From the Where2sing.com forum: re: cover stories The futility of comps could no doubt hurt feelings and, as amateur events, they suffers the same problems as beauty pageants. As Keynes put it: 'we devote our intelligences to anticipating what average opinion expects the average opinion to be' (General Theory of Employment Interest and Money, 1936). Recent research confirms that our idea of beauty seems to be a face with 'averaged' features. A keynesian would see karaoke comps as working like that - judges try and anticipate what the average person would think. This is why some people who see themselves as above average feel cheated when they see people win who are appealing to the perceived (as distinct from actual) average tastes. That is why when David inspired me to write a paper on karaoke comps (www.how2sing.com) it wasn't from a perspective of winning but rather understanding how they work so as to get value out of them even if you know you are unlikely to win.
The feature article on four types is typical Jungian archetype. Marg, correct me if I'm wrong but my guess would be that these types represent, in order, Feeling, Sensate, Thinking, Intuition. Certainly, we've seen many of the characters described. It should be kept in mind that individuals often tend to try to emphasize their subordinate traits to either compensate or merely to avoid being stereotyped.
