From the Where2sing.com forum:

To the author of today's boiling point (being overlooked in a comp due to management / the venue owner stepping in)....
Comp chasing and run of the mill karaokers alike harp on about the merit of competitions to the karaoke scene but at the end of the day, it is a business decision on the part of the venue management / owners to earn more income. If comp rigging fits their agenda, that's something an otherwise deserving contestant just has to accept. Just scrub them off your list of competition venues.
I know it's hard to be overlooked in a comp despite having the support of the audience even if you turn up solo while most of the other contestants have their rent a crowds in tow or even for being mistaken as a pro and deliberately prejudiced against though you may actually be an amateur. While I do sympathize, know that to say, 'something needs to be done about this interference by pub management,' is the height of arrogance on the part of a singer. They supply everything to you but your talent and clothes. Microphones, music, audience, venue, prizes. To complain is to be looking a gift horse in the mouth! Be grateful for the opportunity to show your wares!
The quality of competitions like that of karaoke businesses and venues themselves, can be very diverse. Some are legitimate, many are not. It's a luck of the draw scenario and that is not going to change even if karaoke competitions become a professionally organized, state / nationally regulated activity. Unlike with poker machines, karaoke comp winners are determined by people - and people are fallible, subjective creatures. Some people even pre-determine who is to win because THEY CAN. Even if the day comes where talent quality is judged by computers, those judging parameters will have to have been determined by someone before programming, so by default, even those computers will be biased in some way insofar as judging performers and there may still be disagreements over who deserved to win and who didn't.
The sooner you accept that this is what entering karaoke competitions entails, the sooner you'll be able to get the most enjoyment out of them.
