From the Where2sing.com forum:

James T Orr: I'm consistently surprised at the reaction that some 'old and off-beat' numbers get when I drag them out - Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash and the modern classics such as Foreigner. The modern stuff isn't really that difficult to sing as they rely more on tone and rhythm rather than outright range.

I have a voice that is always recognizably mine, used to be best in the Baritone range but spent quite some time working on it to push up into the Tenor range. People have told me I have the tone of John Farnham ( but not the range lol ), Jimmy Barnes ( cheating with a falsetto blend..), Johnny Cash and Bono ( I don't see this myself.. ). Of the modern stuff people like the James Blunt, Morrison Jr stuff and *I* like Orson, Snow Patrol and Hinder. I look for songs with good bones as these can be adapted to any voice and still 'sound right'.

The trick is to slightly over-sing a song, pitching slightly higher and more energetic than the original.
