Re the garden karaoke story on the main page...
I find it sad that there are people who have no regard for their neighbours. I don't know if it's due to a lack of seeing things from someone else's perspective or just not caring.
At my place, (I live in an apartment building), it can get very noisy with parties on the roof or just loud stereos from neighbour's apartments or even cars.
That people can set up karaoke and not even think about how they're disturbing neighbours is just beyond me. A little courtesy is surely not too difficult to understand, is it?
I liken it to drivers who get continually annoyed at slow walking pedestrians at crossings and then, when those drivers are pedestrians themselves, they ALSO walk slowly out of a twisted sense of revenge even though the drivers THEY are holding up are likely NOT the pedestrians who usually hold THEM up. So, the loud partier at home probably thinks they need not show any courtesy to the neighbours cos those neighbours have shown none to them. If you show no courtesy, you have no right to complain about the same treatment. If you DO show courtesy, you're well within your rights to complain to them and if you get no satisfactory result, to take it up with the authorities to intervene.
The 'upping the ante' attitude with regards to noise pollution fails to improve the situation. Is that so hard to see? If everyone paid respect to each other, it would be a better place for all. A little courtesy goes a long way.
