These are questions more for the KJ's and sound engineers here...
Do you find deeper voiced singers require sound or eq levels to be adjusted?
Usually, it is harder for us deeper voices - male and female alike - to get the same amount of volume out over the top of music. We have to put that little bit extra effort in than the higher voiced folk do.
I find if I have plenty of volume that when singing deeply, the sound is kind of muddy. I am guessing that is first because for deeper notes, I already have plenty of bass in my voice and second, because I have one of those rare types of voices whose notes flow into each other. Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline and Judy Collins are 3 I know of who have it. Most singers (even smooth crooners) don't. The term I've heard used to describe it is, 'a good line of voice.' Difficult to describe but for illustrative purposes, let's first use the song Happy Birthday and 2nd, say the usual singer (including those with very pleasurable voices) will sing a phrase of notes thus:
'Hap py birth day to you. Hap py birth day to you. Hap py birth day dear so and so. Hap py birth day to you.'
Elvis, Patsy, Judy and yes, myself will sing it (at the same speed) thus:
Happybirthday toyou. Happybirthday toyou. Happybirthdaydearsoandso. Happybirthday toyou.
Even someone with a smooth voice like Roy Orbison or Michael Buble or Nana Mouskouri or Trisha Yearwood have that near imperceptible pause between notes keeping the sounds distinctly separate.
As most don't have the kind of voice which blends all the notes together, I'm guessing fx on the mic would affect it adversely at times given that they allow people with very staccato or stop-start-choppy voices to maintain that bathroom echoing sound. Trouble with turning up the treble for me is that it makes my voice turn... well... trebly! lol Since it's the deep notes that showcase my voice, it loses its quality. Any suggestions on how to deal with the problem? Sure taking the mic a little further away helps fx wise but then the volume suffers and when you're singing in the bottom part of your range, it's difficult again to get the volume out so I'm looking for advice that might be helpful for other KJs to know also.
Also, how do live fx settings differ from recording styled ones, if at all?
All feedback appreciated. =)
