From the Where2sing.com forum:

Johnny B and Leather Baron an interesting topic.
Johnny B some singers actually ask for more bass especially the younger generation no matter how they sound.
I think this come from, (as LB has rightfully suggested) wanting “that booming 'live band' sound”.
How many times have you heard people in the car next to you with the bass turned up to the max
Not all singers however need heaps of adjustment, but I do find that the ones that do need the most adjustments are the deeper voiced singers and to the other extreme the high pitched singers.
It’s also interesting to note that quite a few Karaoke tracks have a lot bass in the music anyway and when a KJ adds more it can become quite muddy or distorted. Add this to someone that has a deep voice and the clarity becomes very mixed indeed.
I know that you have already dismissed a KJ adding more treble but I believe an adjustment of both the mids and treble would fix the problem and still allow a reasonable amount of bass to come through.
Regarding pulling the microphone away from you this is a KJ nightmare.
It is far better to have the microphone closer when singing and for the adjustment to be made by the KJ, than to have it too far away where sometimes it’s impossible to adjust.
There are of course those that could sing with the microphone about a metre away and still have a large sound but this is not the norm.
