Hi Kev
you are so right with regards to Mic technique..........SM 58 mics for example are designed to be held at 90 degrees to your face (not cupped)and at about 1-2 inches from your mouth.thats how they work best and that also allows the KJ to keep control ...with only slight pulling away on very loud notes by the singer...if a singer can only remember that during their performance then even the very loudest voices are are easy to control........ its When singers insist on waving the mic around like an icecream cone....come at it from all different angles .....drop it down to their waist (even inadvertantly point it at the foldback)..is what causes all sorts of problems for an operator.....we certainly do not have the luxury of being able to do a sound check on individual singers

It should also be noted that most operators have 20-40 singers to contend with every night....all having different abilities and voice projection capabilities...with as you say.....the very bassy and trebbly voices needing some attention in the mix and given that most of us set the mic gain (trim) at a constant position throughout the night.... which is usually suitable for 98% of all singers..then all of a sudden you are faced with a new singer who in fact may not even be a screamer as such......... yet nevertheless has such a powerefull voice (particularly in the lower register) that it throws all your normal settings into chaos.

I find the biggest challenge are often the late arrivals.........those who are out for a good time....are NOT karaoke singers at all.........and in fact do not sing (in a singing voice) their songs at all....but somehow get through their songs using a normal talking voice (loud) to sing their way through...........I dont know if that last statement makes any sense but I dont know how else to describe what I mean ? .LOL
