From the Where2sing.com forum:

re Guitaraoke: I had a look at some demo's. Personally, I would find it easier to just take a guitar up on stage, play and sing without the backing track. The lyric plus guitar chords were very confusing. You might say 'well, just memorize the words'. But that would defeat the purpose -ie- if I know the song and can play the chords the backing track is nothing different to a Midi sequence and I might as well be a club act. To me the lure of karaoke was that I did NOT have to rehearse, memorize songs or guitar chords. Therefore I can choose from whichever of the 5,000+ songs appeals on the night. I'm sure guitaraoke looks like fun and I'd certainly try it if our local had one. After all I've brought violin, harmonica, and kazoo to karaoke in the past. Why not a guitar?
