All Johnny.B...... heeeehee Thats why there are ' dots / Markings ' on ' top ' of the fret board , they are there as a guide ...ie.... in most cases ( but sometimes they start on the ' A note which is the 5 fret down ) , starting from the ' top ' of the guitar ( where the tuning nobs are ) the first dot will be on the ' G note ( thats the 3rd fret down ) , the 2nd will be on the' A note a double dot on the ' B not then a dot on ' E not and so on they repeat , these dots / markings are especially good for a guide for when you play ' Bar Chords ' , back in the 80's for many wonderful Power Ballard's & rocks songs they would use ' power cords which was basically your first finger ( the one next to the thumb ) on the ' root ' note and the Third finger ( the one next to the little finger ) on the 7 th note ( if memory serves me correct ) so what i mean is this that the 1 st finger is lets say is on the 'G note ( the thick coil string directly under the Dot ) then the third finger goes the 'D note ( on the 2nd thickest string directly under the A note then you strum in ONLY down ward motion to what ever tempo the song is in and you ONLY strum on those TWO strings and then you can go up and down the fret board as long as you know your ' Root ' notes to start with ..
