From the Where2sing.com forum:

LB, the two issues are inter-related. Just as no one suggests violence should be tolerated, no one is suggesting that only good singers should be allowed at karaoke. The common problematic theme is the tolerance for sinking to the lowest denominator. Enough on that topic.

Re: recordings up on the Web, raised a few posts ago. I've given it some thought and there are a number of legal ways to do this:
1. obtain written copyright permissions
2. write and perform our own songs
3. perform songs out of copyright –ie- printed prior to 1922
4. everyone perform a ‘standard’ song like Waltzing Matilda or Advance Aus Fair
Of these, only option 1 would really be karaoke and this would require serious negotiations with a number of companies. The other options are not particularly palatable as they really take us out of the karaoke realm -ie- if we can write and sing we are musicians, not karaoke hobbyists. If we do cover versions of out of copyright songs we are folk singers. But there are some possibilities here. Anyone interested in pursuing the recording issue?
