| From the Where2sing.com forum: David in the weekly post referred to private Asian karaoke boxes as 'torture chambers' and surmised 'So is this where karaoke gets it's poor reputation? Is the asian karaoke room, or karaoke box, responsible for the notion that this is a purely social activity where expertise counts for nothing?'. My understanding of Asian rooms is limited to those in Oz, what I've read, & what returning tourists have said. My image of the origins of karaoke has always been tipsy Japanese businessmen, who are notorious for late night 'working sessions' laced with whiskey, doing My Way. Apparently in some Asian countries the karaoke industry is dominated by these karaoke boxes and private rooms sometimes as an extension of prostitution and other downmarket activities. So perhaps we should count our blessings to have a scene which is more like the US/UK models, which is probably helped along by the comp's. However much some of us dislike the comp influence, they do tend to lift the game and make people take notice of what can be done by singers who take it seriously and play the 'empty orchestra' (kara-oke) as the truly fine instrument that it is.
