From the Where2sing.com forum:

Musical comps in general can appear biased as there is no objective reference standard. It is not like the 100m Freestyle, with a stopwatch & photofinish as the ultimate arbiter. Indeed, karaoke is much more like a beauty contest or the sharemarket. Even there, bias will be perceived. As John Maynard Keynes pointed out in 1936: “It is not a case of choosing those which, to the best of one’s judgment, are really the prettiest, nor even those which average opinion genuinely thinks the prettiest. ... we devote our intelligences to anticipating what average opinion expects the average opinion to be. .. ( General Theory of Employment Interest and Money). This explains well why mediocrity sometimes seems to rule.

Life often seems unfair. I've spent most of my life in science, yet instead of getting prizes, I get the emnity of colleagues for speaking out. I've spent even longer singing, yet have won more medals as a swimmer. It is frustrating for serious singers to watch others become overnight pop stars. But this had been going on since the days of radio.

I think last night I saw one objective distinguishing feature of the true comp wanker: anyone who listens to their mp3 between their own songs is hardly in the spirit of karaoke. I may put my fingers in my ears, but at least I'm listening to the singer, albeit at a comfortable noise level. I was at first encouraged when these folk showed up and sang some nice show tunes. But if the mp3 player shows their contempt for the rest of us - stuff them. I'l go back to singing my own schlock & not worrying about their sensibilities. Clearly they don't care about mine.
